It was a normal morning by Marcus' standards. Wake up, stare at ceiling for 15 minutes, roll over, and get up. He'd then eat his normal breakfast of cereal that came in very unhealthy colors, brush his teeth, comb his hair, check the fridge for any notices from his dad, and get on the Internet.
But despite the start, it wasn't exactly a normal day. Marcus' dad was away with work, prosecuting again, so Marcus was home alone. The cereal was on it's last legs, so it turned to soup when milk was added, with the occasional piece. And, the beta version of an new game was about released.
Almost everyone knew of the genius game designer know by the name of ALPHAbet/soup (it was a lowercase alpha on the screen name, but Unicode was so old, everyone just called him ALPHA for short.) He had started a blog in his early twenties that featured his Scratch projects and fan raves, even though it hadn't been updated in over a year and a half. His new game 2mirror2morrow was scheduled to come out in a few months, and the expectation levels already were through the roof.
Needless to say, this was the beta version that Marcus was waiting for. ALPHA was going to choose a select few to beta test the game, along with (weirdly) a $1000 check for those who were chosen. All you had to do was be on the net at 10:00 am, and have been on the net for at least 2 hours prior. Marcus had woken up at 7:15 to make sure he had time.
It was 7:45, and the internet was open and ready for Marcus. He went and put the headset on. It always took him a while to switch his vision to see the Net, and not the cushiony inside of the headset. It was also hard to move around without actually moving in real life. Marcus had learned that the
Suddenly he was in a busy scramble crossing, like one that you'd see in Shibuya or New York City, bumping into people left and right. He could hear excuses in every language and enthusiastic conversations and music. He walked to the fountain in the middle and immediately noticed his friends.
"Dirk! Lew! Dessy!" he cried. Dirk had his huge headphones on, and was obviously mixing his tracks while listening to his favorite music. Dirk was already planning to be on MonsterCat in a few years, despite his young age. Lewis was sketching something with a blue pen, probably his new girlfriend. They were probably going to meet RL in about a week. Desmond was fishing through his inventory. He'd probably lost one of his items again.
They looked up from their usual spots and activities. Dirk put his headphones down around his neck, and moved off the edge of the fountain. Lewis put the drawing app away, and floated to the ground where he'd been hovering for the past few minutes. Desmond closed his inventory and stood up off the ground where he was sitting.
"Hey, man!" Dirk said, lowering his square-shaped sunglasses. They didn't expose his eyes at all, which ruined the look he was trying to give. "Thought you wouldn't show up in time." His HoloWatch floated around him. "It's almost eight."
"Nah, I wouldn't miss this for the world!" Marcus grinned. He high-fived Dirk. He looked at the others. "Good to have you guys here." Lewis nodded, and Desmond shrugged. "Hey, if one of us gets chose for the test, let's contact the others, okay?"
Lewis smiled. "You don't have to remind us. I know Dirk and I would tell you, but I can't speak for Dessy over here." He pointed over his shoulder to Demond, who was stewing angrily.
"That's because I'd kill you if you didn't tell us what it was like to test the game." Desmond interjected. He pushed his glasses back up his nose. "And don't call me Dessy. My name is Desmond."
"And we all know that he's not kidding." Dirk quipped. They all laughed, and when Desmond gave them a look of pure malice, they all laughed even harder.
"I really will kill you." Desmond added, and they all cracked up as the bell tower struck eight o' clock.
